WILMINGTON, N.C.
The 33rd Annual Jack Morris and Ben Presant Tournament (The Shrimparoo) was held Oct 14-16 at the Wilmington YMCA which is unequaled as a host facility. First time entries from Calif, New York State and Belgium added greatly to the overall competitive level of the tournament. The banquet was very jovial and lasted past 1030 with more than enough shrimp for all and even a couple steaks left on the grill.
The match scores were definitely closer this year than at any previous tournament with several matches being decided in a tie breaker. Two individuals deserve recognition. Jim Ward was on his game and mixed up his ceiling game with close wall pass shots to achieve relatively easy victories. Jim Falcone showed incredible determination to continue on through a hamstring injury to take his singles final to a tiebreaker.
Great appreciation to the organizers for their time and considerable effort. Bill Nye (coordinator extraordinaire), Joe Noto who insured competitive matches were the order of the day, Ray Anderson for managing the Shrimparoo and the army of locals and Wilmington YMCA personnel that insured the success of the tournament.
