CULLOWHEE, N.C.
Fifty-seven players showed up in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina for the 18th Annual Mountain Classic Handball Tournament. Like most handball tournaments, it's really a great feeling to have that many friends show up in one place. After a day and one half of great handball, the banquet was held at the Best Western Rivers Edge right on the beautiful Tuckaseegee River. Local singer and songwriter Carmella Brooks, accompanied by tournament directors C.W. Stewart on keyboards and Randy Lanier on percussion provided entertainment. World Champion John Lenior also provided his interesting style of singing and joking.
In the finals on Sunday the most interesting match was the singles match between Si Aman and National Champion Bill Bonbrake, won in the tye breaker 11-10 by Aman.
We want to thank our wives, Debi and Susan, Co-director Steve Brown,Townsend Stewart, my niece Dee Lanier and her boyfriend Eli Hipps for all their great help without which the tournament would probably be upside down. Note: Turns out Eli tried handball for the very first time and loved it. He is by far the best first time handball player I have ever seen and will join us in our regular weekly matches.
Thanks to all the players for your support and contributions!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
